The
flexagon was discovered in 1939 by a British mathematics student
called Arthur Stone. Whilst idly folding a strip of paper, he found
he had created a flat, hexagonal structure which could be turned
inside out to reveal a new face from the interior. Being a brilliant
mathematician, he didn't stop there and had soon discovered an entire
family of structures with similar properties, which he called flexagons.
Formed
from 36 wooden pieces and a strip of ribbon, Crafty Coaster is
an improved design of flexagon which can form 6 different patterns.
The addition of magnetic fasteners turns it into a simple puzzle.
With
full instructions included, it is easy for a 5 year old to manage,
yet fascinating enough to charm any adult. You can even use it
as a drink mat for hot or cold drinks.
Crafty
Coaster is fun for fidgets. Serious puzzlers and mathematicians
might like to check out Kaleidoscope, which
is a higher order of flexagon.
